TURKEY EARTHQUAKE EMERGENCY
Turkey faces massive humanitarian needs and catastrophic damage.
At 4:17am local time on Monday, February 6th, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated parts of Turkey (officially known as Türkiye) and Syria, near the city of Gaziantep. A series of powerful aftershocks followed. Later that same day, a second earthquake (M7.5) hit the Elbistan district, about 80 miles north of Gaziantep, adding to the destruction.
Rescue teams worked tirelessly to save people trapped under rubble and provide shelter and support to those who had lost their homes or were afraid to return inside in Turkey and Syria.
Sadly, on February 20th, just two weeks after the first earthquake, another 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck near Antakya in Turkey, an area already severely impacted by the earlier quakes. The subsequent aftershocks caused further devastation and loss of life.
To date, it has been reported that over 45,000 people have lost their lives as a result of the earthquakes, with many thousands more injured.
As rescue operations persist, the emphasis is gradually transitioning towards offering vital aid to survivors who have suffered the loss of their homes, possessions, sources of income, and loved ones.
As a result of the thousands of collapsed buildings and destroyed hospitals, roads, and infrastructure, millions of people are in immediate need of assistance.
